Candace J. Academy

Candace Jamila Richardson Avents was born on December 6, 1982 to Ralph and Lynnette Richardson.  A native of Portsmouth, VA she graduated from I.C. Norcom High School.  She received a BS degree from Liberty University, Lynchburg VA and was an entrepreneur and published author.  As a loving wife and mother of two talented children, she was a devoted follower of Christ.   Candace was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. ® and led numerous volunteer and mentoring events across the Hampton Roads area.

She led Youth Ministries at Little Grove Baptist Church and served as Director of the Foundation Learning Center.  Foundation Learning Center was started as an after-school program that grew into a school that provides a Christian foundation and quality education for students.  In September of 2005, Ms. Candace, as she was affectionately called by her students, introduced the Learn Though Play curriculum. Children learn Bible verses, foreign languages, sign language, phonics, and math among other subjects.  FLC remains committed to the original ideals of setting a Christian foundation for all students.

Prior to Candace being called home to be with the Lord in 2013, she established the CJA Foundation to lead efforts around education and enrichment in the community.  It was her desire to establish a lifelong legacy that inspires young people to achieve personal goals.  Her legacy indeed lives on among the 75+ current students and 20 staff members of FLC, now under the direction of Mrs. Sylvia Sessoms. Foundation Learning Center currently caters to educating young children ages 2 through 2nd grade with plans of expanding to 3rd Grade.

There are several projects that we are trying to solve including building a space that will meet the needs of our growing community population.  We need your support, would you consider making a donation to help us achieve our mission? With your charitable donation, we will be able to carry out and fulfill the mission of FLC, Changing our Community one Christian scholar at a time”.
